The BEST WAY to Keep Your Tremolo Springs QUIET
Resonance from your Tremolo cavity Springs can cause unwanted noise and ringing that even sound like string harmonics. This is particularly problematic at higher gain distortion settings. In this video I’ll show you my preferred method to damp springs without affecting tuning stability and the ability of the tremolo system to return accurately to pitch.

    Thank you Sir. In my micro world I didn't realize folks were that misinformed. Your explanation mostly mirrors my understanding of the Plek. Although, I didn't come to that overnight. Lots of self study, and having Phil Jacoby refret and Plek over 12 guitars for me over several years chystalized and tempered my understanding of it. And also to your point, Pete Skermetta did a stainless steel refret for me without it. And his work is also awesome. Love the video, and agree with all.

    Can I do this on a bass guitar as well, the "not detuning the strings" first? I'm worried that it'll snap the neck pocket if I don't detune a bit.

    • @DrKevGuitar
      @DrKevGuitar 3 дня назад

      Great question! 1) don't ever do anything you personally are not comfortable doing (particularly if risking damage that will require a repair). Detune if you feel the need. 2) I recall one of the Fender bass truss rod videos, they loosen the screws just as I do to bend the neck back to get access to the truss rod screw without completely removing the neck, and they state it's not necessary to detune. On that basis, it should be fine.

Will try your hack on my bass asap! Thanks again for the tips!

    This doesn't help at all. I already know that you're supposed to strum the strings on the upstroke. He doesn't seem to know that people struggling with strumming encounter massive resistance on the upstroke that turns the pick 90 degrees in one bar. I'm now giving up guitar after 6 months of not even being able to do the most basic skill of being able to strum!!!!!

    May i ask one more question? Checking the neck back plate of my strat, it's connected with 4 screws to the body (as usual), but there is one more hole in it, which also grabs the same allen wrench as the trussrod does. Which function has that fifth "extra" hole/screw in the neck back plate?

    • @DrKevGuitar
      @DrKevGuitar 10 дней назад

      Sounds like your guitar has a neck tilt function, which does exactly the same job as a neck shim. If you can adjust the bridge saddles to get the string action you need, you don’t need to adjust it.

    What i don't understand is why you keep replying to people that this guitar is not for beginners, i think every beginner knows this.. These kits are for people who want to tinker, and don't want a expensive kit so they can experiment on it. that being said i play guitar for like 35 years, and i have owned many many guitars, including Gibson les Paul and USA Fenders and high end Ibanez guitars, and i do agree that a kit like this is not stellar, not even if you level and polish the frets, give it low action and intonate it properly, but it will play OK and light if you do that, and sound reasonable if you know what you're doing, i also fix and totally rework old broken guitars, and with some time i can make these kits into fine guitars. If you cannot, that only means that you're not skilled enough to make it play and sound OK. These modern kits are way better than most of the cheap guitars you bought back in the 70's. And saying that 3 hours of benchwork will net you 180 dollars of extra cost (cause that would cost it if you bring it to a guitar shop) is not the point of these kits. The point of these kits is to let people tinker and play around with building a guitar and slowly learn a bit how this is done. if you change the hardware on it after you finished up the wood decently you can make a pretty good guitar out of it, i can in about 10 hours of work make it into a beauty that plays well. So i think that making a vid about this is more for yourself to get content on youtube and earn some ads revenue, than to informatively educate people about the true purpose of these cheap guitar kits..They're not ment for beginners that want to have a cheap guitar, cause you can buy a cheap guitar for 75 dollar from Fazley or Harley Benton, that only needs setup that can be done in a guitar shop for 50 dollars and than you have a reasonably cheap and reasonably playing guitar. It's also pretty obvious that if you're going to be negative about these cheap kits, that you are going to be overloaded with comments that feel negative to you, cause many people do understand the true purpose of these kits, and they are going to be annoyed by your opinion. So this "They deserve to be informed and warned of the reality of these kits" comment is completely wrong, and that is not a opinion, it's a fact, it is merely your opinion, and probably based on your lack of tinker skills. The fact that you broke the tuners screws in the headstock underscribes this, you need to pre-drill the holes, the fact that they broke is a good sign, it means the wood they used is hard and strong, as it needs to be for a neck. And the screws are only ment to keep the tuners from turning, so you don't need to screw them in very tight. It all makes sense to me that you're not very technical.

    • @DrKevGuitar
      @DrKevGuitar 12 дней назад

      Well, there is an unnecessarily long comment. Three responses: 1) I’m a very small RUclips channel and since that video came out I have made €18 in revenue from it. Money is not a goal. 2) insisting that I’m wrong to want to inform uninformed people is insanely ridiculous. 3) 25 years professional experience as a guitarist and guitar tech and I was guitar tech for one of the largest music stores in Europe. There’s no problem with my technical skills. If you really want to bend over backwards to convince yourself that there’s something wrong with me, I’m sure you can fit in a full thousand word comment on somebody else’s channel.

  • @leoburton642
    @leoburton642 12 дней назад

    I agree with @CANNIMAGINE, 100% This guy has no business posting such negativity, and discouraging comments. This doesn't just set a negative tone to these kits, but all. Guitar kits are not for learning to play on...they exist for learning to build on. Entry level. It's a kit...the work needed to make them playable, is the whole point of them being kits. Don't listen to this, individual, (to put it nicely),...If you wana learn to build..and all that's involved...any kit, is a great start. Build on....

    • @DrKevGuitar
      @DrKevGuitar 12 дней назад

      This individual (to put it nicely) presumably thinks beginners to the world of guitars should just spend their money uniformed and suck it up if they don't get an immediately playable guitar? Or, maybe informed people are better equipped to make good purchase decisions, and that's a good thing? Should I have lied about the real faults I found and/or pretended they didn't exist? Would you have been happier if my review was falsely positive to fit with your pre-existing expectations?

    • @leoburton642
      @leoburton642 12 дней назад

      You need to get over yourself there pal. You're completely missing the point of what a "KIT" is. They're what a person makes of them. And anyone else's opinion of them, could only be validated, if you're comparing guality of the parts,..not the finished build. That can only improve, as an individual, improves on their skills. Hence, what kits exist for.

      Obviously, without your guitar in front of me I can’t say for certain but noise decreasing when we turn down the tone control on the guitar is normal (the tone control is getting rid of the most audible frequencies of the noise). It’s not your body causing the hum, it’s 60 cycle hum from your amp and pedal power sources, your computer power source, and whatever else is using electrical power in the room. Shield your guitar’s control cavities and the back of the pick guard with copper tape and I guarantee the hum will massively reduce.

I literally went to the woods with a multiprocessor unit powered by batteries and the pickups of the two guitars behave the same way than when I am at home. • @DrKevGuitar

      I don't think the storm had anything to do with. Possible likely a electrical transformer somewhere near your house? If you can find, call your electric supply people and ask them to fix it. It's often a fixable fault. The direction you face when the noise is at its strongest is the direction to look (either directly in front or behind you).

      Not really, physics/mother nature just doesn't work that way. Faraday cages are less effective as the frequency gets lower and at audio frequencies are very low in the grand scheme of electromagnetic things. There are some ways to make improvements but they are small compared to the expense and/or added difficulty.

    I got the Single Cut-kit for my birthday a couple of years back. To me it was a great experience painting it and putting it together. But I replaced pretty much everything even before I started the build; locking tuners, Tusq nut, pickups, pots, knobs. Painted the top gold and the back black and even put a vinyl decal with my own last name on the headstock in the Gibson font. Feel like I learned a lot about setting up guitars, intonation, cleaning up sharp fret ends and so on. I'm really proud of how it turned out and it's very playable. But I see your points, would be far from as nice with only the stock components and without a willingness to learn and put in the effort yourself. If your a beginner and just want a playable instrument, the lowest end Harly Bentons costs as much as these kits and make a lot more sense in that senario.

    I was intrigued with this idea, as it appeared to make perfect sense, and after listening to a lot of discussion on flat necks are better as peak amplitude isn't always over the 8th fret etc.. Here are the actual results of adding more relief to a strat neck which then allowed me to lower the bridge. Interestingly the action at the 7th stayed the same whilst the 17th fret action was now significantly lower. Thanks for the video. Your proof was what I needed so I didn't take my whole guitar apart trying to find a "hands off" buzz. I found a solution for you however; I bought an ESD strap (something you would have if you're working on computers or electronics) to discharge static electricity. I wrap it around my ankle and attach the other lead to literally anywhere else (metal end of a patch cable in my pedal board). Problem solved! Another thing you can do (which I did while waiting for said ESD strap) was plug a patch cable into my other amp's input and literally slide the other end of the cable in my sock. I promise you, it sounds weird but it worked. And that solution costs you nothing. You could in theory tape the end of the patch cable to the metal part of another patch cable that's on your pedal board instead of plugging it into another amp. I happen to have two amps, only one of which I would be using at any point in time. The amp doesn't even need to be on. What you're trying to do is replicate the 'touching another piece of metal' idea without using your hands (so you can play the guitar, of course). The wrist strap (which I wrap on my ankle) works perfectly for me. Thanks again for the video!

    • @DrKevGuitar
      @DrKevGuitar Месяц назад

      The push-in design was a response to the screw-in tremolo bar, which does have its own problems. Generally, they are either loose and floppy or too tight, there’s always a little bit of wiggle or play in the bar, which is annoying, and if they’re overtightened, too many times, the threaded end of the bar will break off in the block. This in fact is the better technology.

    Perfectly flat necks are feasible but the fretboard has to be perfectly leveled, frets have to be leveled, nut slot height perfect and saddle height perfect. I’ve played one guitar with a flawlessly flat neck with insanely low action and zero fret buzz. It was a Vigier. Also interesting thing about that guitar is that the neck has a perfectly flat radius too. It was an incredible guitar.

    Your a genius thank you 🙏 had a new bridge installed, was afraid to force the whammy bar out, it’s a Wilkinson bridge but I followed your technique popped out no problem 😀

    On the peterson, is it posible to use two colors if you leave the display always on blue, then red when muted?

      @DrKevGuitar Месяц назад

      No, that’s not possible, but it would be an awesome feature if it were.

      @DrKevGuitar if i use display always on it still mutes the sound when the switch is pressed right? If so, is there somthing on the screen to let you know it's muted or not?

    Great idea! I love to see how they don't interfere while still muting any unwanted vibrations

      Yes, I've tried a ton of the usual methods but this really works just as well and is so simple.👍

    So if you are adjusting the truss rod from the nut, you turn counter clock give less relief?? you did not make that clear

    • @DrKevGuitar
      @DrKevGuitar Месяц назад

      No. Always the same from the point of view of facing/looking at the adjusting nut (i.e. with the neck behind the nut), tighten to reduce neck relief, right is tight, so turn clockwise to reduce relief.

    I have used this method to coat the neck of my bass which I sanded down the matte paint off of, which eventually turned gloss by all the playing and the grease of my hands. But I am curious to see if this would also help with the feel of the neck of the bass I play all the time which already has some sort of oil finish on it? It is a maple neck and it doesn't look dry like an unfinished wood, would it hurt to try?

    • @DrKevGuitar
      @DrKevGuitar Месяц назад

      No, the worst you could do (if the finish was thick) is make on oily mess which you would just clean off. Personally, I would start as I did here with a light sandpaper clean and take the shiny finish back to matte, then oil. Go lightly first, and maybe just a small part of the neck near the heel to see how it goes on. 👍

      @@DrKevGuitar Thanks man, right now it is not that bad but it is uneven and it gets glossy and sticky as the grease of my palm polishes the the back of the neck. I sand it down lightly to get rid of the dirt when it happens but it goes back to its usual state since there isn't a properly sealing finish. Previously I used a combination of beeswax and mineral oil (baby oil) since they were the only types of agents that I had and could work as surface finish. This attempt like my previous attempt will be out of curiousity as much it is a need for the bass. I will come back with the results.

    I finally carefully measured and it was 1/8 of an inch to each side of the e strings at the nut so I decided to loosen up the neck and you were right. It made a big difference. Makes sense all the time when you’re playing you’re pulling down on the neck…. I considered putting some thread locker on the screws, but decided against it. Hopefully it stays tight for a good while. Thanks!

    • @DrKevGuitar
      @DrKevGuitar Месяц назад

      No thread locker! 1) It's only intended for metal to metal, 2) it won't stop the neck moving if the headstock gets a knock and then you will need to loosen the screws out without risk of damaging anything.

    Thanks for the video in my case I think I misaligned the nut a little bit

    • @DrKevGuitar
      @DrKevGuitar Месяц назад

      That’s possible. Just remember that whatever the misalignment is at the nut it’ll be half that at the 12th fret and zero at the bridge. String alignment and spacing at the nut is tricky because the different string thicknesses throw things off, as does what we think it should look like versus what we like to feel under our fingers. It’s especially obvious on bass guitars.

      @chrischenevey6446 Месяц назад

      @@DrKevGuitar Appreciate that reply. I am tempted to loosen the neck bolts and see if a little tweak solves my issue. Because I glued the nut in with gorilla glue smh and am afraid it would be hard to knock out. But in all honesty it isn't really effecting my playing at all as there is enough room for the high e, I guess I would say the mis alignment is very slight, so maybe I just need to stop thinking about it!
